Calibration of Instruments

چکیده
It is presumed that most instruments exhibit linearity in the range of their operation. An instrument is said to be linear if the input physical quantity and the resulting output reading of the instrument have a linear relationship. The output of the instrument could be linear deflection, angular deflection or voltage etc. This output has to be displayed in terms of the physical quantity which the instrument was expected to measure in the first place. The manufacturer calibrates this display by comparing the output of the instrument with respect to a standard input. Having obtained such an instrument, which has been marked and calibrated by the manufacturer, the user has to periodically calibrate the instrument to see whether it is working within the prescribed limits.

Choice of the Meaurement Points for a Calibration in a Range
− Calibration of instruments like modern programmable instruments is generally made in specific points within each range, even if the desired result is the general calibration of the instruments. This paper is considering the problem of how many points are needed for a correct calibration of a range, and, by means of a statistical approach, the method propose evaluates a confidence interval whe...
متن کاملNGST Calibration Overview
Adequate calibration of the NGST science instruments is a critical step in order to achieve the science goals of the mission. This report presents a discussion of some key calibration issues for NGST, with an attempt to produce quantitative—albeit rough—estimates of the quality and frequency of the required observations. In several areas, non-traditional approaches—such as self-calibration, ext...
متن کاملSome Thoughts on Cross-calibration in the Mid-Infrared
I provide some examples of the cross-calibration between the instruments aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. Current cross-calibration accuracy between the Spitzer instruments is better than 5% and consistent with the calibration uncertainties of the instruments and the current uncertainties in the absolute calibration of infrared zero-points. Utility of cross-calibration extends beyond reconci...
متن کاملAbsolute Radiometric Calibration of ALS Intensity Data: Effects on Accuracy and Target Classification
Radiometric calibration of airborne laser scanning (ALS) intensity data aims at retrieving a value related to the target scattering properties, which is independent on the instrument or flight parameters. The aim of a calibration procedure is also to be able to compare results from different flights and instruments, but practical applications are sparsely available, and the performance of calib...
متن کاملDesign Aspects of the JWST Calibration Pipeline Software
Some considerations relating to the design of the JWST Calibration pipelines are presented. Much of the code for calibrating the detectors can be shared among the instruments, and the fact that several observing modes are common to more than one instrument means that it makes sense to design the pipelines to calibrate observing modes rather than instruments.
متن کاملUncertainty estimation by the concept of virtual instruments
Published in: proceedings SPIE 4401 (2001) 'Recent Developments in Traceable Dimensional Measurements', Decker, Brown (ed) ABSTRACT For the calibration of length standards and instruments, various methods are available for which usually an uncertainty according to the GUM [1] can be set up. However, from calibration data of a measuring instrument it is not always evident what the uncertainty wi...
